SIMON MWANGI
Biography
Simon Mwangi, a Kenyan native, has a passion for helping people that has been evident throughout his professional career. As a university student, Simon studied Social Services in Uganda, and today has his Master’s degree in counseling psychology. His work is driven by his passion to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds (various races, religions, abilities, etc.) to create a stronger community. He has previously worked for the Catholic Parish in Dandora, overseeing the health, elderly, and family care programming. At Watoto CIAO, Simon coordinates all the organization’s programs and activities. Simon’s vision for Watoto CIAO includes mobilizing the community to participate in the efforts while also continuing to support children with disabilities. He believes that in doing so, he can empower parents, guardians, children, and the community to help one another in a more kind and effective way.
Since 2008, Watoto CIAO has served over 900 children with disabilities. Through their work, Watoto has seen a great shift in the understanding and support of this population. Before, these children were thought of as cursed, but now, the community is growing in support of these children, their education, and participation in society. Watoto CIAO has even partnered with the government’s Department of Children services and other civil service organizations to address the need and improvement of special education opportunities in the public school system.
